The choir is currently looking for BASSES and MALE TENORS. If you are interested and would like to join us please get in touch. All our other sections are full; please join the mailing list here. Please note that because our mailing list is now so big, new spaces are offered out to the mailing list (usually in September) on a first-to-email-back basis.

Are you looking for an a cappella choir that covers a range of challenging folk music, has high musical standards, and is also fun with a great sense of community? Do you want to be involved in a range of professional performances, concerts and festivals? If so, The Great Sea Choir could be the group for you!

GSC is one of South West England's' leading mixed-voice contemporary choirs, directed and led by our passionate conductors Heg Brignall and Julu Irvine.

Rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings from 7:15 - 9:15pm at Mutley Baptist Church in Plymouth. We structure our year around three seasons; January - March, April - July and September - December, each of which incorporates a run of gigs. From informal singing in pub settings to large-scale concerts and festivals. Each year is different and gigs are varied and diverse.

To become a member of GSC you will need to commit to regular rehearsals, be dedicated to performing as well as be able to rehearse and learn music outside of group rehearsals. We don't audition our singers, however our standard is high and we learn quickly through often challenging and complex arrangements. We empower and equip our singers with the tools and skills to be able to improve their voices and their harmony singing in order to reach the standard we set. The ability to sing in tune and being open to learning vocal techniques is essential; harmony singing experience a bonus. However, we regularly take on complete beginners and teach them how to sing well and with confidence; it's part of the magic of the choir! Our main requirements are enthusiasm and commitment.

We use sheet music whilst learning but the ability to sight read the music is not necessary as every part is also taught by ear. Many of our members use the score as learning aid even though they don't read the notes. Parts are also uploaded to our dropbox so you can listen at home.  Before joining, new singers will meet with Heg and Julu to check that they are placed in the appropriate section.

The choir is a hugely friendly and inclusive group of mixed ages and is a great way to meet new people. We regularly organise social activities and have a facebook group where members can communicate with each other. We are a lively and enthusiastic choir which works to professional standards.

We look forward to welcoming you!
